Chapter 23
The laptop rested on our bed next to Ron Barnesâs burner phone . On her side of the bed, resting against a pillowed backrest, Marie sipped an obscenely large mug of black coffee with the word MOMâS emblazoned along the circumference. With a big panting smile, Lady rested in a half-curl position on my side of the bed. Directly above her, I sat Indian-style, my legs under the blankets. Waiting.
âCome onâ¦â Marie hissed. Her eyes, like mine, focused on the laptop screen. Waiting.
For the last two hours, since leaving the parking lot at Caseyâs, Iâd been enlightening my wife with every moment and word shared between Ron Barnes and me. I held nothing back this time, not one horrific, sick detail.
Marie now knew Barnes considered me a fellow âconnoisseurâ of underage girls, that he believed I had designs on Darla, and that heâd offered me a rendezvous with one of his loyal Lolitas if I procured him a new laptop. Most disturbing to my wife, however, was my revelation that Barnes knew Darla was in his backyard the morning we found his dead cat. From disbelief to disgust to fear, Marieâs reaction to every new detail ran the gamut of emotions until eventually settling into sheer outrage.
To my utter surprise, Marie now demanded I log onto the laptop, contact Wormwood, and apprise him of the latest developments. So, for the last twenty minutes, weâd been staring at the laptop, anxiously awaiting the appearance of our own personal deus ex machina .
âWhere the hell is he?â Marieâs words steamed over the rim of her ginormous mug.
âHeâll be on,â I assured her. âHe always is. Plus, he just hired me for two grand. Heâll IM back. Trust me.â
âWhat are you guys doing in there?â Jasonâs shrill call was only slightly muted by our closed, locked door. âWhy is the door locked?â Our doorknob jiggled.
âTheyâre having sex, baby Jason.â Thatâs our Button.
âEwwwwwaaawwww!â Jason screeched like heâd just been scalded.
âNot that you even know what that isâ¦â Darla pressed.
âI do so know what sex is!â Jason shrieked. âAnd I know theyâre not having sex because Ladyâs in there.â
âThey always screw with Lady in the room,â Darla cackled. âChris is into that!â
âDARLA!!â Marie tore her attention away from the laptop screen, launched herself off our bed, and started moving towards the door.
âMom, what does Darla mean that Chris is into that? Into what?â
âKNOCK IT OFF, both of you!â Marie threw open the door. Jason scurried away as my wife marched into the living room, Lady at her heels.
The sound from the living room TV now filtered into our room. Bleak narration, the strains of an intense multi-person argument, and a girlâs screaming declaration âI donât give a BLEEP what any of you say! Iâll do what I wantâ¦â told me immediately that Darla was watching Intervention, one of her favorite ârealityâ shows.
âDâDarla said you were having sex,â Jason stammered, obviously trying to deflect Marieâs rage toward his sister.
âI know exactly what she said,â Marie fumed and whirled towards Darla.
